Insight into the J. H. McCreary Auction Co.
by Joe H. McCreary

We have been serving our customers since 1982.  We are located between Houston and San Antonio 17 miles off of Interstate 10 at the Sealy or Columbus exits.  I am a native of Eagle Lake. My wife, Candy, is also an auctioneer. Our son, Chris,  is also very involved with the business. I went to Nashville to become an auctioneer when Chris was only 7 months old - he graduated from high school this past year - where did the time go! During this time we have built a reputation for honesty and fairness.

I am a member of the Texas Auctioneers Association and the National Auctioneers Association. It is hard to be a country auctioneer now like in the old days because of the laws and requirements. I feel it is vital to be part of organizations that keep you current with the laws.

Sellers - We try to provide whatever service fits your situation the best. You may need all of our services or just some of them.

When you call us, we set up an consultation appointment . This costs nothing. We listen to your situation and offer suggestions on what we could do in your particular case.  A family estate is usually moved to our auction facilities in Eagle Lake. We prefer to come into a home before the family “cleans” it up. Sometimes people try to get ready for us by throwing away all the trash - don’t. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure! Let us decide what is collectible and what is trash. We offer complete service. We pack it, we move it, we advertise.

For liquidation of  businesses, it may be in the best interest to sell on site.

Buyers - We  try to be at your service. We value you and your opinions in our business. You may drop by the auction  to make a sealed bid on items or you may make a bid from our flyer on our web page. If you want to get on our mailing list, e-mail us.

If you are thinking of selling, give us a call and see it auction is right for you! If you are looking for something special, call us a call or e-mail us. We do not have scheduled auctions, so during these times we will start advertising items for sale. Check it out!

Buying at an Auction
Buying at auction is great fun but could be very intimidating for the first time buyer. My advice is you must learn to do it or you’re going to miss some great bargains and a whole lot of fun. You need to register and get a number. This will cost you one dollar at our auctions. Your will also need to bring your driver’s license or some proof of identification. If you have a tax #, bring it if planning to use it or you will pay tax.  If you’re a first time buyer, make sure you come and introduce yourself to either myself or my wife. We love to know our customers!

You need to come early and inspect the pieces you are interested in. Everything is sold as-where is with no warranties or guarantees. Looking through all the boxes at the small items may be boring, but these are some of the best bargains. Where else could you find something you need, pay a reasonable price for it and still be able to take home everything else in the box! What a deal!

When you are bidding on that treasure, make sure you stand where the auctioneer or floor worker can see you. Hold your card up high where we can see it - don’t be timid or you may miss out on that wonderful treasure. If two people are bidding you may have to wait until one drops out, but it is all part of the auction excitement.

Do we really take bids from just a wink or from the pull of the ear?
Yes, we sometimes do, but that is after years of doing business with that same customer and knowing their ways of bidding. On your first trip, I wouldn’t try the winking business since my wife works on the floor also! You know how women are! Sometimes people complain because we miss their bids, but it is your job to be standing in our view especially when the bids start flying ( a lot of people bidding at once on the same piece).

How much to pay for an item at auction?
We can’t tell you. Do you need the item or simply want the item. If you need a dining room suite, for example, go price them. That will help you determine how much to spend.

Do you just want the item?
Decide what you will pay before you start bidding. We want you to be happy with what your purchases. You must pay for the items before you pick it up. When you pay you will show your receipts to the security men in the back and they will get your items for you. Do not try to move big pieces of furniture during the sale unless you want looks of disgust from the other people who are still trying to bid!

Still a little nervous? Don’t be! Just come, inspect, watch others. You will be holding that bidders card up in no time and taking home those treasures!
